Health Impact Subaward Grant

About 2.0 percent of the country’s population of about 170 million is intellectually disabled, which means there are about 3.4 million people with intellectual disabilities in the country. Through the Healthy Athletes Program, Special Olympics Bangladesh is conducting health screening and awareness raising activities for special athletes through the Healthy Athlete Screening Event. There was no provision for follow-up services for referral athletes after the health examination. With support and guidance from Special Olympics International, awareness has been created and Special Olympics Bangladesh is moving forward to build a healthy community model. Through this program, Special Olympics Bangladesh is looking for more partners to provide long-term health care and follow-up services and advance the healthy community.

By expanding this Healthy Community Model to different districts of Bangladesh, SOBD changes the curriculum, trains health care professionals, influences various policies, builds public opinion for integrated health programs, builds partnerships for follow-up treatment, and raises awareness through the Special Olympics movement. The Special Olympics movement will be strengthened to build partnerships to provide follow-up services and improve the quality of healthcare for the intellectually disabled population.
