
The Special Olympics Movement was founded in the USA in 1968 by the late Eunice Kennedy Shriver, sister of President John F Kennedy. Shriver believed that the Olympic ideals of sport could give confidence and new hope to people with intellectual disabilities (learning disabilities) as well as to those who cared for them. Today Special Olympics reaches over 5.7million athletes in more than 200 countries worldwide.
The Bangladesh Chapter of Special Olympics was inaugurated in 1994. Mr. Ashraf Dowla was the founder Chairman of Special Olympics Bangladesh. It is run by a Board of Directors who are all responsible members of society and keen to make positive changes in the lives of these children. Our mission is to provide year-round sport training and athletic competitions in a variety of Olympic-type sports for individuals with intellectual disabilities and give them opportunities to develop their physical fitness, demonstrate courage, experience joy and participate along with their families, other SO Bangladesh athletes and community members.Our vision as well is to reach out to individuals with intellectual disabilities and help them become useful and productive citizens, accepted and respected in their communities.
